Flyers Trade Talk: A New 1C Candidate Requests a Trade
It’s time to add another potential 1C to the Philadelphia Flyers list of trade candidates. On Thursday, Elliote Friedman reported that the Detroit Red Wings were captain Dylan Larkin has requested an exchange of the team.
Larkin will be 30 when the 2026-27 season begins. Five years remain on his contract worth $8.7 million per year.
Since entering the competition in 2015, Larkin has been a regular. 68 games is the fewest he has played in a season, and that was in 2023-24, which was a points-per-game plus year for him.
He has been with the Red Wings for 11 seasons, making his debut in 2015. Now it appears his time in the Motor City is coming to an end.
Should the Flyers pursue Larkin?
Larkin is exactly the kind of player the Flyers like. He’s 6-foot-4, a 200-foot centerman who is fast, brutal and reliable at the point. Larkin won’t blow you away offensively, but he produces enough to be a 1C on an NHL team. He is known for his defensive abilities and responsibility, which could benefit attacking-minded players like Porter Martone, Trevor Zegras and Matvei Michkov.
Larkin has a full no-trade clause for next season and beyond, giving him the freedom to choose his destination.
However, Friedman does say that Red Wings GM Steve Yzerman “will not be bullied into a scenario he doesn’t like.” This means that he will show poise and patience in negotiations.
In 808 career games, Larkin has 276 goals and 367 assists. He is coming off a 74-game 2025-26 season in which he scored a career-high 34 goals and 67 points.
Larkin’s career high is 79 points in 2022-2023. He also tied a career-best 47 assists that season.
In his 11-year career, Larkin has made one playoff appearance; his rookie season.
