Southern California earthquake faults have reached a 1,000-year peak stress

Stress levels under two of Southern California’s most dangerous fault systems have risen to their highest levels in at least 1,000 years, raising new fears that a long-feared “big collapse” could be approaching.

These alarming findings come from a new AGU study examining the San Andreas and San Jacinto fault systems, where researchers found that tectonic stress has reached levels not seen in a thousand years.

Scientists cannot predict when a major earthquake will occur; However, the study shows that the geological conditions for a potentially catastrophic earthquake are becoming clearer.

Researchers have reconstructed about 1,000 years of earthquake activity using geological evidence, radiocarbon dating, historical records, and advanced computer simulations that track how stress builds up and moves between faults over time.

Their model showed that stress levels along the two fault systems have now reached exceptionally high levels, raising concerns about the spread of a large rupture across multiple faults.

The area attracting the most attention is the Cajon Corridor, northeast of Los Angeles, where the San Andreas and San Jacinto faults meet.

Researchers refer to it as an “earthquake gating” because it can show whether rupture stays on a single fault or spreads to nearby fault systems.

This difference could have serious consequences.

The researchers also found that stress levels on the San Andreas and San Jacinto fault are becoming more similar, creating conditions that may make it easier for an earthquake to transition between the two systems.

These findings are a strong reminder that Southern California remains at risk of a major earthquake.

Nearly 170 years after the 7.9-magnitude Fort Tejon earthquake struck the San Andreas Fault, it remains one of the strongest earthquakes in California history.

Today, Southern California is home to millions of residents, along with transportation networks and critical infrastructure that did not exist when the Fort Tejon earthquake occurred.

For Californians who have heard warnings about the “Big Fault” for many years, the pressure beneath some of the state’s most dangerous faults is now higher than it has been in at least a millennium.
