A 3.3 magnitude earthquake hits the waters off Johor

JOHOR: A weak 3.3-magnitude earthquake struck the waters off Batu Pahat, Johor, early this morning, according to a statement from the Malaysian Meteorological Department (MetMalaysia).

The administration said the earthquake occurred at 1.17 am.

She added that this site is located 20 kilometers southwest of Batu Pahat and at a depth of 10 kilometers.

MetMalaysia said tremors may be felt around Batu Pahat, and it will continue to monitor the situation closely.

This is the sixth earthquake recorded in the region, according to a Free Malaysia Today report. The previous 3.1 magnitude earthquake occurred on April 4 in the waters off Batu Pahat. On March 14, another 3.2-magnitude earthquake occurred in the area.

A series of minor earthquakes struck Johor, starting with a 4.1 magnitude earthquake that struck an area 5 kilometers west of Segamat on August 24, 2025.
