Satellite images reveal the extent of the devastation caused by the Venezuelan earthquake

Satellite images revealed that the two devastating earthquakes that struck Venezuela flattened buildings and covered parts of the country’s northern coast in layers of dust and debris.

The areas north of the capital, Caracas, were exposed to two tremors of 7.2 and 7.5 degrees, less than a minute apart, on June 24, in one of the worst earthquake disasters in Latin America ever.

In the worst-affected areas around the coastal regions of La Guaira and Carabaleda, hundreds of buildings collapsed and thousands of people were trapped under mountains of debris.

Before: Parts of the La Guaira coast were wiped out. / After: Entire buildings were flattened and roads covered in dust.

On Tuesday, local time, Venezuelan National Assembly President Jorge Rodriguez told reporters that the latest government tally of damaged buildings had risen to at least 855 and another 189 had collapsed.

These numbers differ from the number of damaged and collapsed buildings published by NASA, which estimated that the earthquakes likely damaged or destroyed 58,870 buildings, according to a preliminary assessment of satellite data.

BEFORE: Along the coast in La Guaira, damage from shaking can be seen from space. / After: In some residential areas, not a single building remains standing.

Rodriguez said that the government believes that more than 30,000 people were present in the most affected areas when the two earthquakes struck, and about 13,400 people succeeded in fleeing the area when the disaster struck.

He also confirmed on Wednesday, local time, that the death toll from the two earthquakes had risen to at least 2,295 dead, and more than 11,000 injured.

BEFORE: In other areas of La Guaira, satellite images show that some homes have been reduced to holes in the ground. /After: The buildings near the main road appear flat as dust covers the streets.

Rodriguez said at least 6,400 people were rescued in the six days following the quakes, including 5,380 people rescued in the first two days of Venezuela’s emergency response to the disaster.

These numbers dropped significantly in the following days, with only 1,081 people rescued from the impact sites between June 27 and 30.

He added: “We must cling to hope that people will continue to be found under the rubble.”

Before: To the east along the coast, the city of Caraballeda was also greatly affected. /After: In that city, high-rise buildings and outdoor swimming pools can be seen completely destroyed.

Rodriguez also told reporters that Venezuelan authorities have recorded at least 782 aftershocks across the country since the first two quakes.

According to the government, the earthquakes destroyed or damaged 38 hospitals nationwide.

The World Health Organization said it has so far evaluated 21 of those facilities, three of which are no longer operational.

Six others were damaged, while the rest collapsed under the weight of the injuries.

BEFORE: The small town of Macuto, between La Guaira and Caraballeda, appears to have suffered major damage. / After: It appears that most of the buildings in the town have been leveled.

The United Nations says nearly 50,000 people are still missing in the most affected areas.

Rescue teams from Ecuador and the United States halted operations in the early hours of Tuesday, local time, at a site in Macoto, La Guaira, when they stopped receiving responses from a mother and her three children trapped under a nine-story building after more than 40 hours of trying to get them out.

“In the end we believe that the days have already passed and what we will find now is death,” said Major Jorge Montanero, leader of the EQ11 team from the Ecuadorian city of Guayaquil.

“Unfortunately, things did not develop positively.” Loading…

The International Rescue Committee (IRC) said in a statement that some search efforts began turning into recovery operations after the crucial 72-hour period to find survivors had passed.

The International Rescue Committee said, “The scale of the response does not meet the scale of humanitarian needs.”

Before that: Dozens of Makoto Towers buildings overlooking the ocean were also destroyed. /After: It appears that many of the town’s houses have lost their roofs.

Not all collapsed buildings had professional rescue teams on site, with relatives and neighbors working to clear the rubble to retrieve survivors or bodies, according to residents from different areas.

“There is no doubt that we are facing a higher number than what has already been reported,” Gianluca Rampolla, the UN resident coordinator in Venezuela, said on Monday.

“I can provide an estimate. We are purchasing 10,000 body bags, and this has been agreed with the local authorities.”
