The ground shook along portions of Florida’s east coast at approximately 3:04 p.m. on July 16. The event had a magnitude of 3.9, according to the USGS, but it was not an earthquake, the agency said.

The U.S. Geological Survey, which tracks seismic activity, said it was likely a “test explosion” about 91.3 miles east-northeast of Ponce Inlet.

“The ground motions recorded for this event are more typical of an explosion than a naturally occurring earthquake. The Navy has conducted full ship shock tests in this area in the past,” the agency said.

People reportedly felt the shaking along the coast, from Port Orange to Titusville and as far inland as Orlando, Winter Haven and Land O’ Lakes.

The USGS also reported a 4.9 magnitude earthquake at 1:37 PM on June 15 in water that was about 10 miles deep.
