A 7.4 magnitude earthquake hits southern Mexico and the tsunami warning is cancelled

Mexico City – July 17 (SANA) A strong earthquake measuring 7.4 on the Richter scale struck off the coast of the state of Chiapas in southern Mexico today, Friday, prompting the issuance of a tsunami warning that was later canceled without the authorities announcing serious damage or casualties.

The earthquake occurred at 8:48 am local time (14:48 GMT), and its epicenter was about 135 kilometers southwest of Ciudad Hidalgo, Chiapas state, near the border with Guatemala, at a depth of 10 kilometers, according to the Mexican National Seismological Service.

The tsunami warning has been cancelled

The Marine Tsunami Warning Center in Mexico canceled the tsunami warning after analyzing the behavior of sea level in coastal areas near the epicenter of the earthquake, stressing that “significant changes” are not expected. However, authorities advised people to stay away from beaches due to strong currents that could affect marine activities.

The US Tsunami Warning System had previously warned that dangerous waves could reach the coasts within 300 kilometers of the earthquake epicenter.

No major damage was reported

Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum said that after speaking with the governors of Chiapas and Tabasco, no material damage or casualties had been reported. “After the 7.4 magnitude earthquake southwest of Huixtla and the one recorded in Ciudad Hidalgo, I spoke with the governors of Chiapas and Tabasco, two states that have not reported any damage so far. Protocols have been activated in neighboring states,” Sheinbaum wrote on X.

Chiapas state governor Eduardo Ramírez said, “So far we have nothing to regret,” while Oaxaca state governor Salomon Jara said residents of the state capital felt the quake with “moderate intensity,” and no major damage was reported.

Aftershocks and regional impact

The authorities reported about 80 aftershocks as of midday on Friday, the largest of which reached a magnitude of 6.5. Minor damage was reported in Chiapas, including structural cracks in some buildings. Two people were injured in Tapachula, one after jumping from the third floor during the earthquake, and the other was injured by a falling door.

The earthquake was felt as far away as Guatemala and El Salvador, where residents evacuated buildings, but the authorities did not announce any injuries or serious damage.
