Vital medical aid arrives in Venezuela to support post-earthquake patient care – Angels in Medicine

More than six tons of medicines and supplies requested by the Venezuelan Red Cross and Solidarity Action, provided by Direct Relief, arrived in Caracas on Saturday.

An important shipment of medical aid has arrived in Venezuela to treat patients affected by the devastating earthquakes that occurred last month.

On Saturday, 25 pallets loaded with medical aid, totaling more than six tons, arrived in Caracas. The shipment includes medications to manage chronic diseases, including diabetes, field medical kits for first responders, hygiene products for those displaced from their homes, personal protective equipment, medical tents for care outside the facility walls, and more.

The shipment was received by the Venezuelan Red Cross and Acción Solidaria, a non-profit organization focused on health care in Venezuela. In addition to medical support, Direct Relief also provided financial assistance to Acción Solidaria to strengthen its capacity to safely store aid, including cold chain medicines, and allow its logistics operations to operate on a larger scale.

Direct Relief is responding with a phased medical strategy designed to deal with the operational reality of this disaster: damaged hospitals, difficult access to airports, transport disruptions, power outages, and a health system that was already under severe pressure before the earthquakes struck. The strategy is to move urgently, but cautiously – delivering needed, vetted, verified and medically appropriate resources through trusted partners closer to the need.

To date, Direct Relief’s support for the Venezuela earthquake response has included four shipments totaling 45 pallets and 11.4 tons of aid and medical supplies worth $3.97 million, as well as $300,000 in grants to four organizations. The shipments have included or are expected to include medications, medical backpacks, hygiene kits, personal protective equipment, water purification supplies, emergency food items, and other resources required for partners including Acción Solidaria, Fundación Wayuu Taya, and others, as well as regional distribution channels.
