What happened, where and when?

On July 8, 2025, the central region of Guatemala was rocked by a series of earthquakes with epicenters in the departments of Sacatepequez and Escuintla. These seismic events affected many areas in those provinces, as well as municipalities within the province of Guatemala.

According to official reports, the first earthquake occurred at 3:11 pm with a magnitude of 5.2, triggering a seismic sequence that peaked at 3:41 pm with a second tremor of 5.6 magnitude. The epicenter of both events was in Santa María de Jesús, located in Sacatepequez province.

Information from the National Institute of Seismology, Volcanology, Meteorology and Hydrology (INSIVUMEH) indicates that by July 15 – exactly one week after the initial event – ​​a total of 1,062 earthquakes had been recorded, 36 of which were reported and felt by the population. Seismic activity was primarily concentrated along the border area between the provinces of Sacatepequez, Escuintla and Guatemala.

INSIVUMEH also reported that focal mechanism analysis of the seismic sequences was performed using FMNEAR software, confirming that the earthquakes were associated with ruptures in normal fault systems and fault systems. The solutions obtained were considered to be of high quality, with intensification levels above 70%, providing a high degree of accuracy of the applied seismic model and allowing an accurate understanding of the magnitude and characteristics of events.

On the same day, 8 July, the National Coordinator for Disaster Reduction (CONRED) announced a nationwide institutional orange alert. On July 9, 2025, the Ministry of Public Health and Social Assistance (MSPAS) issued a statement declaring the activation of the institutional red alert for health service networks in the departments of Sacatepequez, Escuintla and Guatemala. This decision was taken within the framework of the “Institutional Operational Protocol for Geological Threats” with the aim of anticipating potential impacts on health infrastructure and ensuring the continuity of essential health services, even in the event of additional aftershocks or seismic events.

On 12 July, the Municipal Coordinator for Disaster Reduction (COMRED) declared an institutional red alert in the municipality of Santa María de Jesús due to a state of emergency caused by seismic activity.

Following this announcement, emergency response became the responsibility of CONRED at the provincial level in Sacatepéquez. In the provinces of Escuintla and Guatemala, CONRED coordinated the response at the national level.

By the end of 2025, seismic activity associated with the July earthquake sequence had decreased compared to the initial emergency period. However, earthquake monitoring continued throughout the year, as Guatemala remained vulnerable to frequent seismic activity due to its geological conditions.

According to INSIVUMEH, a total of 11,811 seismic events were recorded nationwide in 2025, of which 397 were reported as felt by residents. The highest levels of seismic activity were recorded in July and August, when the number of seismic events reached 2,533 and 2,246, respectively. July also recorded the highest number of felt earthquakes, with 145 events, followed by August with 75 events.

Although seismic events continued to be monitored through the end of the year, no additional significant humanitarian impacts directly related to the July earthquake sequence were identified in the information available by the end of the operation.
