The 5.1 magnitude Sumatra earthquake was felt in parts of Phuket

BANGKOK: A 5.1-magnitude earthquake struck North Sumatra, Indonesia, on Wednesday (July 22), at a depth of 10 km, about 381 km southwest of Mueang Satun district in Satun province.

People in Phuket reported feeling the earthquake, with reports of lights shaking and the building swaying.

The Earthquake Monitoring Division of the Thai Meteorological Administration said the event did not meet the criteria for a cell broadcast alert and had no impact on Thailand.

At 11.18am on Wednesday (22 July 2026), the department reported a 5.1 magnitude earthquake in North Sumatra, Indonesia.

The epicenter of the earthquake was at 4.225 degrees north, 97.661 degrees east, at a depth of 10 kilometers and about 381 kilometers southwest of Mueang Satun district in Satun province.

Although the epicenter was outside Thailand, the quake’s size and shallow depth meant that residents of southern Thailand, especially Phuket, felt its tremors, with residents and office workers in high-rise buildings reporting clearly feeling the shaking.

Only a few minutes after the first earthquake occurred, the situation still required close monitoring.

At 11:41 a.m., the department detected a second earthquake, or aftershock, measuring 4.4 in the same general area of ​​North Sumatra, Indonesia.

It was also recorded at a depth of 10 kilometers at coordinates 4.524°N, 98.038°E.

The two rapid successive earthquakes indicate the release of energy along a fault in the Sumatra region, which is prone to geological activity.

The Thai Meteorological Department added that the recent seismic activity did not meet the warning criteria via the cell broadcast system and had no impact on Thailand.
