A rare earthquake shook the Texas Panhandle, and was felt in several states

AMARILLO, Texas (KFDA) – The largest earthquake recorded in the Texas Panhandle in more than 100 years shook the area early Thursday morning.

According to the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS), a 5.0 magnitude earthquake occurred at 5:21 a.m. in Roberts County, about 24 miles southeast of Miami, Texas, between Pampa and Spearman. The epicenter of the earthquake was about 3.5 miles below the Earth’s surface.

Shaking was felt across much of the Texas Panhandle, including Amarillo, and reached as far as Oklahoma City and Tulsa, Oklahoma. Residents also reported feeling the quake in parts of New Mexico.

In Pampa, several residents said the tremor lasted for 30 seconds.

“I swear it lasted longer than 20 seconds, maybe even 30 seconds, if not longer,” Pampa resident Tandy Hudson said.

Many described their homes and beds shaking, hearing loud creaking noises, and seeing objects shaking inside their homes.

“I was asleep, completely asleep, and my experience was that my bed was shaking, literally, from side to side,” Tandy said. “It felt like someone was putting their arms on either side of my bed and was physically shaking it. I had to brace myself because of the shaking.”

Pampa resident Gavin Hudson describes the moment like a scene from a movie.

“It was like a scene out of a movie. My brother has a bearded dragon and there’s a bunch of picture frames up there, and I just started hitting them all,” Gavin said.

Gray County and Pampa City Emergency Management Coordinator Troy Schweigerath said the quake originated in the Anadarko Basin.

“One fault that runs just below the Pampas, it’s called the Amarillo Basin fault. It goes right down to Amarillo and all the way across another state. And then above us, where this happened, it was in the Anadarko Basin. So what’s happening is plate tectonic shifting, and right where this depression is happening, that’s where you get the epicenter, and that’s where it was recorded from, and it propagated, where it went through the entire Panhandle,” he said. According to the earthquake’s track, this earthquake is the sixth largest in Texas history.

The quake occurred near several Panhandle communities, including Spearman, Pampa, Borger and Dumas, but its effects were felt throughout the rural region and beyond Texas.

Emergency management officials say earthquakes of this size are usually followed by smaller aftershocks that can last for days or even weeks.

As of Thursday afternoon, no major damage or injuries had been reported.
