Kolkata: Construction of Majerhat Bridge has been discontinued as the State Public Works Department (PWD), the implementing agency, has not yet obtained permission from Eastern Railway to install the bearings. The setback may delay the start of the bridge in October. State officials said construction has stalled since last week because casting could not take place unless the bearings were installed. Bridge bearings are structural equipment installed between the infrastructure and the superstructure (girder) to transmit the load produced by vehicle traffic, earthquake, wind speed, or self-weight of the superstructure. On March 18, PWD applied for ER permission to install 12 bearings in the Railroad Overpass (ROB) portion. ER engineers said the bearing design is under consideration and a mandatory inspection will be performed before permission is granted. Majerhat Bridge is actually a ROB connecting the city with Behala and beyond. A period of ROB fell on September 4, 2018.
