Abu Dhabi: A former lawmaker from the ruling Justice and Development Party in Turkey issued a map of “Greater Turkey” dating back to the era of the Seljuk Empire and its defeat of the Byzantine Empire in the Battle of Malakird in 1071.

Metin Kulunek, a confidant of Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, posted the map on Twitter to commemorate the battle that took place on August 26, amid tension between Turkey and Greece over the dispute over oil and gas exploration in the eastern Mediterranean.

The controversial map shows what he called “Greater Turkey”, which includes vast areas extending from northern Greece to the eastern Aegean islands, half of Bulgaria, Cyprus, and most of Armenia, and swathes of Georgia, Iraq and Syria.
