Some people in Auckland and Bay of Plenty woke up early this weekend with the M5.2 earthquake 120 kilometers northeast of Wangamata on Saturday morning.

The earthquake occurred at 3.47 in the morning.

GeoNet says they have received more than 2,500 physical reports, from Auckland to Hakatane.

“Since the main shock, we have identified more than 80 aftershocks, the largest of which we have recorded were M4.6 on Saturday 29-08-20 and M4.7 Sunday morning 08-30-2020 and both events felt in bay,” says a statement on the GeoNet website.

Aftershocks occur in the wake of the M5.2 earthquake.

Residents of Oakland and Coromandel were nervous by the tremors, as earthquakes are not uncommon in these areas.

“As you can see in the image below, showing 20 years of existing earthquakes, there have been only a few earthquakes in the Auckland area.

“Among these few events, people may remember two events in 2013 that were news of the shaking of the Greater Auckland region and a swarm of earthquakes that occurred in Northland in early 2019.”

Although earthquakes in the Auckland / Northland region are uncommon, GeoNet says people should remember that earthquakes can occur anywhere in New Zealand.
