A magnitude 4.8 earthquake hits Davao del Sur

Metro Manila (CNN Philippines, Aug 31) – A magnitude 4.8 earthquake struck Davao del Sur early Monday morning.

The earthquake that shook Kiblawan town at 1:44 am was initially recorded with a magnitude of 5, but the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology lowered its status to 4.8 at 7:04 am.

The reported severity is as follows:

V density – Kiplawan, Davao del Sur; Malongon, Sarangani;

Intensity IV – Davao City; Digos City and Sta. Cruz, Davao del Sur; Tobi, South Cotabato; Island Garden City of Samal, Davao del Norte

Density III – Coronadal City; Bansalan and Magsaysay, Davao del Sur; Columbio, Sultan of Kudarat

Intensity II – Kidapawan City; General Santos City; Antipas and Makilala, Cotabato

Phivolcs president Renato Solidum told CNN the Philippines that no aftershocks have been reported so far but are expected during the day.

He added that the tremor is related to the series of movements of various malfunctions in the Cotabato fault system since October of last year.

“We do not expect large losses or casualties as a result of this earthquake,” Solidum said.

Phivolcs boss reminded the public to always self-check the safety of their homes and infrastructure to prepare for any strong earthquake that could cause massive property damage.

“This reminder goes to all parts of the country as earthquakes happened in other parts of the country.”

Last week, a 6.6-magnitude earthquake struck Masbate in the Visayas region, killing at least two people and injuring 170 others. The city experienced a intensity of 7, or a “devastating” earthquake, which Fevolux previously said was strong enough to cause poorly built homes to collapse.
