In the lab, researchers poured a solution of three different concentrations of the disinfectant povidone iodine (PVP-I) into a sample of the virus.
They found that even at a concentration of only 0.5%, they completely inactivated SARS-CoV-2 in just 15 seconds.

The solution was diluted in three different concentrations: 0.5%, 1.25% and 2.5%.
The PVP-I concentration was then compared to a 70 percent ethanol solution and the reaction was monitored after 15 and 30 seconds.
All three iodine disinfectants, even at the lowest concentrations, completely inactivated the virus within 15 seconds of contact.
However, the ethanol control was unable to completely kill SARS-CoV-2 over the same period.
This study demonstrates that a 15-second contact time is sufficient for virus inactivation, “the authors said.
“Extensive use of PVP-I nasal disinfectants in patients prior to intranasal procedures can significantly reduce the risk of viral infection due to droplets and the spread of aerosols.”
They added that patients could also be instructed to rinse their nose with PVP-I prior to appointments and procedures to prevent infection in the waiting room and other common areas.
In addition, reducing the amount of virus transmitted to the lungs can reduce the risk of developing severe cases of COVID-19, researchers say.
“Povidone iodine nasal irrigation may be beneficial to the general public as an adjunct to conceal its use as a means of alleviating the virus,” the authors write.
