A strong M6.4 earthquake hits southern Taiwan

A strong, shallow earthquake recorded by Taiwan's Central Weather Administration (CWA) when a M6.4 struck Chiayi County in southern Taiwan at 16:17 UTC on 20 January 2025 (00:17 local time, 21 January). The agency reported a depth of 9.7 kilometers (6 miles). The USGS reported M6.0 at a depth of 10 km (6.2 mi), and EMSC M6.0 at a depth of 6 km (3.7 mi).

The epicenter was located 12 km (8 mi) north of Yujing (population 16,597), 32 km (20 mi) northeast of Yongkang (population 233,730), and 38 km (24 mi) northeast of Tainan (population 771,235 people). 71 km (44 mi) northeast of Kaohsiung (population 1,519,711), Takao, Taiwan.

According to USGS PAGER, it is estimated that 1,429,000 people felt strong shaking, 3,668,000 moderate, and 8,160,000 mild.

The US Geological Survey issued a green alert for shaking-related deaths and economic losses. There is a low possibility of casualties and damage.

In general, residents of this area reside in structures that are a mixture of weak and earthquake-resistant buildings. The predominant weak building types are unknown/miscellaneous types and heavy wooden structures.

Recent earthquakes in this area have caused secondary hazards such as landslides that may have contributed to the losses.

The USGS estimates that liquefaction caused by this earthquake could be significant in intensity and (or) spatial extent.

The number of people living near areas that could have produced liquefaction in this earthquake is more than 1 million.

The M5.1 (USGS) earthquake followed at 16:26 UTC at a depth of 10 km (6.2 mi).
