A magnitude 5.3 earthquake shakes the area, stemming from the observed fault line News

The United States Geological Survey reported a magnitude 5.3 earthquake Wednesday afternoon, 40 miles southeast of St. John’s. The earthquake, which struck at around 2:24 pm, was one of the largest in the area so far this year, and struck a notorious fault line that has caused at least two tsunamis in the past.

According to Regional Emergency Management Agency VI Director Daryl Yashin, the earthquake was far enough in the water not to cause any major damage in the region. However, it was still “of concern” because it occurred in the Anegada Basin, a well-known fault line between St. Thomas and St. Croix.

In 1867, a 7.5-magnitude earthquake in the Small Basin triggered two tsunamis that crashed into both islands, causing massive damage to boats, ports and buildings.

The Wednesday quake was also worrying because it happened alongside a handful of other small earthquakes in the vicinity, Jason said, a sobering reminder of the cluster of earthquakes that shook Puerto Rico at the start of the year.

“If an earthquake was going to have a magnitude 7.5 earthquake, we would have a tsunami and we would have a little time to respond – like 10 minutes,” Jaschen said. “If the car alarm goes off, you start to feel the ground shaking for 30 seconds and you see the water subsiding, that definitely means something is going to happen. Gashin added that tsunami sirens in the region, which were affected by Hurricanes Irma and Maria, were still low. However, the sirens are expected to be erected, with new galvanized steel poles, in January with an initial completion date in May.

On October 15, VITEMA will host a virtual education and preparation event for the VI Great Shake Out at 10:15 a.m. This event is an opportunity to practice how to be safer during major earthquakes, according to the VITEMA statement.

VITEMA encourages schools, businesses, and institutions to review and update emergency preparedness plans and supplies, and secure their spaces to prevent damage and injuries.
