It felt like the earth was moving

I spent my early life driving around the country in a Volkswagen truck with my dad who was suffering from the mental effects of WWII. It has been an enjoyable life with many amazing experiences. The most memorable time is the time we stood high in the mountains on a small mountain path. My father abhor traditional campgrounds and would make his way into the back woods where no one else was. On a dark, rainy night I slept in the little hammock that was my resting place on my father’s bed. I woke up to a tremendous sound as the ground shook and the truck shook back and forth, and the metal shook. I swayed violently and my inner spirit almost exploded. I honestly thought it was the end of the world, and I was overwhelmed with fear. After a few seconds (that sounded like hours), the purrs stopped, and life continued as before. It was my first experience with an earthquake, and an unforgettable terrifying event.

My son Francis lives in California’s Silicon Valley, which is known for its earthquakes and wildfires. He felt his share of earthquakes, but he didn’t feel the same strength as the earthquakes that shook my body and soul on top of that mountain. All his bookshelves and desks are secured to the wall, lest they fall during an earthquake. His fridge has many compartments and shelves to protect your bottled and vulnerable groceries. All trees surrounding his home that were likely to hit his roof were cut down and replaced with shorter shrubs. He’s learned how to sneak into the crawl space underneath the house to turn off facilities, and he’s got an earthquake emergency kit with lanterns, blankets, food, and other necessary supplies. It’s ready for one person! What he wasn’t ready for was his house sinking. At first, the little things became a nuisance. Windows will not close tightly and the tailgate will be misaligned and unable to close. He noticed that when his son played the ball on the floor, he would roll by himself down the aisle and settle under his bed. Then he noticed that if he looked at his dining room table, the light unit was hanging upright, but the wall behind it appears to slope several inches and the family photos hung there show angled smiley faces. His house was drowning! Due to the drought that had plagued his area for years, the ground under his home was marked by dry dirt that turned downhill with every small earthquake. It is not covered by the homeowner’s insurance because it is a natural occurrence. He is now paying his house bill up and inserting metal supports into the bedrock. He said it was just the cost of living in that area, and that most of his neighbors had likewise had to provide stability for their homes.

The latest news is Rhode Island felt its own earthquake on a scale of 3.6 to 4.2 depending on the report. It came from the movement of rocks along the fault line, causing the earth to vibrate. What’s so surprising to me is that it started more than six miles under the ocean. Six miles! That’s as far as driving a person straight down into the ocean a long drive from Warwick Bacon’s office to Rhode Island Hospital. I am so naive because I never realized his surroundings were such a depth.

Several people have posted posts about the earthquake on Facebook. A friend played Carol King’s song “I Feel the Earth Moving.” Another friend played the song “Shake, Rattle and Roll”.

“Earthquakes don’t kill people,” someone said. “Falling buildings kill people.” Another wrote, “Whose fault is the earthquake?”

We are lucky that the earthquakes here are mild and we can joke about them. Yes, we all felt the Earth was moving!
