The yellow and amber heat health warnings issued by the UK Health and Safety Executive (UKHSA) for many parts of England and Wales have been extended as 2026 becomes the first year in which temperatures of 35C were recorded over six days.

A yellow heatwave warning has been issued for the West Midlands and South West from 9am on Sunday until 9pm on Wednesday.

This means there are likely to be serious impacts across health and social care services due to high temperatures, including increased deaths, particularly among those over 65 and those with existing health problems.

A yellow heatwave warning has been posted for the East Midlands, North West, South East, East England and London, in effect from 9am on Sunday until 9pm on Wednesday.

UKHSA warned there could be similar severe impacts across the region and a potential increase in water-related incidents, including risks from cold water shock and drowning, across the UK.

The Met Office said high temperatures were expected to reach 32 to 34 degrees Celsius in Wales and south-west England on Saturday.

The Met has warned that thunderstorms could develop in parts of the south from Monday, but overall it’s a very dry week ahead.

David Hayter, deputy director of the Met Office, said: “Central and southern England and Wales are expected to see temperatures above 30 degrees for several consecutive days.”

“Temperatures are expected to reach the mid 30s by the weekend, but the focus of the heat will gradually shift to the west of England.

“This will also bring slightly cooler and cloudier conditions to the east coast than recently. It will also be more windy across the south, bringing cooler conditions particularly along the coast and headlands.”

“The main exception to the generally dry and clear weather is northern Scotland, where a cold front brought rain, clouds and some heavy downpours on Friday, but conditions are expected to improve over the weekend.

“There is a chance of increased thunderstorms in parts of the South from Monday, but most areas will remain dry, sunny and very warm through next week.”

The Met Office announced the new record after the highest temperature reached 35.2C at Cotton, Elms, Derbyshire, on Friday afternoon.

Later in the evening, Derbyshire Fire and Rescue (DFR) confirmed that they were currently tackling two bushfires in the area.

Police reported they were dealing with a moorland fire near Arnfield Farm, Glossop, and a separate ongoing fire on Tintwistle Moor.

Also on Friday night, a “trackside” fire involving shrubs broke out at London’s Stratford station at around 7pm, leading to the railway’s closure.

LFB reported the fire was under control around 9.30pm and used the incident to reiterate the risk of bushfires during this weekend’s heat wave.

The brigade said its latest assessment showed the risk in London would increase from “high” to “extreme” from Saturday to Monday due to factors such as prolonged dry weather, heat and wind speeds.

LFB deputy director Tom Goodall said: “We want everyone across the city to enjoy the ongoing heat wave, but this must be done responsibly.
