Massive coronavirus testing for Mercertideville residents and workers

Dozens of people have appeared in a pilot program for mass coronavirus testing at Merthyr Tydfil.

A week after the town registered the highest percentage of new cases in the UK, the RapidCovid-19 test is being offered to local residents and workers, even if they are asymptomatic.

Since then, Merthyr Tydfil has seen the largest decline from about 770 per 100,000 to now below 260 as the effects of the 17-day firebreak in Wales began to work.

The test plan will begin Saturday morning at the town’s Redika Leisure Center, with more sites scheduled to open through the Mercer Tidville County Autonomous Region during November.

People flocked under umbrellas to avoid rain while lining up along the leisure center. The first line was waiting for more than an hour and a half to get inside at around 10:30 am.

The first public test was at 82-year-old Shirley Jones, whose 20-year partner Desmond Rogers, 83, was waiting for cancer treatment at Prince Charles Hospital in town just 24 hours ago. Died in the meantime. I was late because of the pandemic.

“I have to do this because I think it’s right for us all to come here to support the government and take this exam. It’s very important that we do it.

“I may not have come because I was sad to stay this morning, but I knew I had to do the right thing to come here for our community, and everyone I pray to God to come and test as I have.

“I think it’s our duty to set up and protect the community, otherwise we can’t get rid of this coronavirus.”

Lisa Mittens, deputy leader of the Merthyr Tydfil County Autonomous Region Council, said Ms. Jones set an example for the entire population.

She tells PA: The courage that women have shown is incredible.

“It’s very emotional to know that she came here because she influenced her within 24 hours. What she does is incredibly brave.”

The deputy leader said he believed that launching a test pilot was the best way to reduce high-level transmissions in the region.

She states: “Apart from this method, what other methods are there?

“I really want everyone to be there by being able to find and see asymptomatic people who are unknowingly roaming the coronavirus. It can be self-isolated to reduce transmission speed.

“This will eventually help people see their relatives and return to some sort of normality.”

She added: “Obviously, I was hoping that there weren’t as many people with the coronavirus in Merthyr Tydfil as the numbers indicate. That made us sad. But I’m glad I was chosen as this pilot. It’s definitely a good thing if it helps slow down Merthyr Tydfil’s transmission. “

Mytton also praised the staff’s work to get the site up and running with just a week’s notice.

The previous plan included the use of a voting booth for use in the Welsh Parliament in May 2021. The dedicated booth, which should have been sent by the British government, was not displayed and was instead used for self-management of the test swabs.

Lateral flow tests give results within 20-30 minutes. Those who test positive are asked to do a traditional swab test and go home for immediate self-isolation.

The pilot is supported by 165 military personnel and has Brigadier General Andrew Dors, Brigadier General of Wales, one of the first to be tested on Saturday.

Last week, UK Health Minister Matt Hancock said pilots, following those already in operation in Liverpool, would provide an “important understanding” of how to deploy mass testing across the UK.
