Yellowstone scientists ’fears exposed as an earthquake strikes the region:“ A volcanic eruption cannot be stopped ” Science | News

Yellowstone National Park suffered a “very shallow” earthquake of 3.1 magnitude on Wednesday, and was said to have been felt in the area by “a lot of people”. The area is home to the enormous Yellowstone volcano – a caldera formed during three major events – the Huckleberry Ridge eruption 2.1 million years ago, the Mesa Falls eruption 1.3 million years ago and the Lava Creek eruption about 630,000 years ago. Every year, up to 3,000 earthquakes strike the Yellowstone region, though most of them pass unnoticed.

Although not an indication of future volcanic activity, seismicity in Yellowstone is constantly monitored by the United States Geological Survey (USGS).

Despite this, some experts believe there is more that can be done to protect the world.

“Yellowstone has the potential to really wreak havoc,” said Rosalie Lopez, a volcanologist and director of the Planetary Science Division at NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory.

Geoscientist at Yellowstone Park Jefferson Hungerford added that, currently, “we as humans do not have the ability to prevent the eruption of a large volcano.”

He continued: How do we stop a volcano eruption? The basic premise here is to get energy out of the system – that energy is heat – and we can’t do that now. “

Researchers came up with such a plan to “save the world” from giant volcanoes like Yellowstone.

The concept, which would theoretically cost about £ 2.7 billion, proposed drilling into the hydrothermal system and attempting to cool magma.

But not everyone received them well.

“It’s fun to think, but science doesn’t exist and the idea is fraught with other problems,” said Mike Bolland, senior scientist at the Yellowstone Observatory.

Dr. Bolland and Dr. Hungerford agreed that if Yellowstone had erupted, it would be a lava flow rather than an explosion, just as it did 70,000 years ago.

The best solution, they added, is to closely monitor Yellowstone activity.

Dr Hungerford added: “We observe Yellowstone volcano by looking at swelling in the volcano, earthquakes, gas emissions and changes in temperature from the system.

“None of the signs come close to indicating any volcanic activity in our future.”

But a professor of geology at the University of Aberdeen, Dr Luca Siena, has indicated that this is not enough.

He said, “We have to do a lot more than we are doing now to try to prevent a massive volcanic eruption.

“These volcanoes will someday do a thing – and that could be in 100 years, 1,000 years, or even 10,000 years.

“We expect to be on Earth in 10,000 years, and if we do nothing to reduce the pressure of this volcano, we will not be able to stay on the surface of the Earth.

“It’s not a problem that we might face tomorrow, in a year or 100 years, but it is definitely a problem, if we don’t address it now, it might be too late.

We should get the best possible picture of the volcano’s superstructure. Once we know what’s out there, he can move on. “

Wednesday’s earthquake shouldn’t be a cause for concern.

The volcano’s discovery, which tracks such activity, revealed: “Shallow earthquakes are felt more strongly than deep earthquakes because they are closer to the surface.

“The exact size, center and depth of an earthquake may be reviewed within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review the data and revise their calculations, or when other agencies release their report.

“ Based on the preliminary seismic data, the earthquake should not have caused any major damage, but many people probably felt it as a slight shaking in the epicenter area.

You might have felt the weak vibration in West Yellowstone.

“Towns or cities near the epicenter where they may have felt a very weak tremor.”
