Reduced Costs of Strawberry-flavored Children’s HIV Drugs: United
Unitide announced on World AIDS Day that strawberry-flavored HIV treatment for 1.7 million children living with the virus could reduce annual pediatric drug costs by three-quarters.
A global health development organization said in a statement that decentralized HIV treatment was the first to be specifically designed for children and would be first available in six African countries in the first half of 2021.
The new formulation of recommended primary HIV treatment dolutegravir (DTG) is manufactured as 10 milligrams of strawberry-flavored dispersible tablets.
“The long-awaited HIV treatment specifically designed for children will be available in low- and middle-income countries,” Unitide said Tuesday.
“The new pricing agreement between generic makers Viatris and Mylanods means that a new dispersible formulation of DTG will be available for $ 36 per child per year, down from about $ 400.”
According to Unitide, a partner with the World Health Organization (WHO), this will reduce the total annual cost of HIV treatment in children by three-quarters, from more than $ 480 to less than $ 120 per child.
100,000 child deaths annually
Of the 1.7 million children living with HIV, about 100,000 die each year, according to Unitide.
Many children living with HIV are said to be unresponsive to treatment because they are taking antiretroviral drugs in the form of tablets that are not properly administered, have a bitter taste, or are difficult for babies to swallow.
According to Unitide, children under 20 kilograms were unable to take advantage of affordable DTG due to a lack of dispersible tablets, which are considered age-appropriate formulations.
The product will first be launched in Benin, Kenya, Malawi, Nigeria, Uganda and Zimbabwe in the first half of 2021 and will be launched in other countries as well.
Meg Doherty, WHO’s Global HIV Program Director, said 26 million people worldwide are receiving antiretroviral therapy.
She told journalists that 12 of the 127 countries surveyed by the United Nations Health Agency reported very low antiretroviral drug inventory due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
In many countries, distributing months of the drug to patients at a time avoids the restrictions associated with the coronavirus crisis.
