(Center Square) – The Louisiana Department of Health has updated guidance to allow people exposed to COVID-19 to be quarantined for just seven days before returning to school or work.
The 14-day quarantine continues to be the “gold standard” for maximizing the risk of infection and LDH’s recommendations for residents and apartment staff such as nursing homes and prisons.
However, if the test is negative and there are no symptoms, some people can finish the quarantine after 7 days. If the person is not experiencing symptoms, quarantine can be terminated after 10 days without testing.
According to LDH, in a 10-day quarantine, if an individual who leaves the quarantine early becomes infected, the risk of infecting others is about 1%, with an upper limit of 10%. For a 7-day quarantine, if an individual who leaves the quarantine early becomes infected, the risk of infecting others is about 5%, with an upper limit of 12%.
