Mount Etna in Sicily erupted, sending plumes of thick ash and hurling lava fountains into the sky.

The Italian volcano is the largest in Europe, and frequent eruptions at Etna are often accompanied by large lava flows.

Mount Etna, the largest and busiest volcano in Europe, erupted last night – sending plumes of ash into the sky.

Volcanic activity from the southeastern Etna crater was first recorded at 9.20 pm yesterday and within half an hour, the intensity of the eruption increased from medium to high.

The crater produced lava fountains up to 100 meters in height and the plume of dense ash rose to an estimated height of 5 km, according to the Toulouse Volcanic Ash Advisory Center.

Sandfall has also been reported on villages and towns south of the Sicilian volcano.

A loud roar was heard in Calabria as smoke was seen heading towards Catania.

A 2.7 magnitude earthquake was recorded on the slopes of Etna prior to the eruption but it is not known if it was associated or not.

In the past 24 hours, 17 earthquakes were recorded.

The blast was probably a seizure, as it lasted for a short period of time but was extremely intense.

Etna erupts frequently due to its location between the African and Eurasian tectonic plates, as well as the fault between the African and Ionian plate.

The ionic plate tilts backward – giving room for the magma cap to reach the surface.

The most recent eruption of Etna volcano was on 16 March 2017, when ten people were injured, including a BBC news crew.

But the eruptions date back more than 2000 years to 1500 BC.

In 1169, an earthquake prior to a volcano eruption killed 15,000 people, while a devastating side eruption destroyed 15 villages in 1669.

And in 1787 Etna produced one of the most spectacular peak eruptions on record, where fountains of lava were seen 3,000 meters high.

Between 2002 and 2003, a series of activities dumped a huge column of ash that could be seen from space.

It fell as far as Libya – 370 miles from Sicily.

The towering volcano has a height of 3,329 meters – making it the highest peak in Italy south of the Alps.

Etna is also the three largest active volcanoes in Italy and is two and a half times the height of the second largest, Mount Vesuvius.
