Coronavirus: US weekly claims hit 6.6 million – BBC News

The number of Americans seeking unemployment benefits increased in the third week as the economic toll on the coronavirus pandemic increased.

More than 6.6 million people filed jobless claims on April 4, the Department of Labor reported.

In order to somehow get rid of the economy, the Federal Reserve said it would raise $ 2.3 billion in loans.

Deepening the economic crisis, the number of virus cases in the US has grown to over 430,000.

Over the past three weeks, more than 16 million people have made unemployment claims, reducing activity that helps contain viruses, which shut down most businesses, and put about 95 percent of Americans in some form of lockout.

“Today’s report continues to reflect the personal sacrifice of American workers and their families to slow the spread of coronavirus,” said Secretary of Labor Eugene Scalia.

The number of positives worldwide reached just 1.6 million, up from 1.5 the previous day. As a reminder: Last week on Friday, that number was less than a million.

The countries currently most affected are the USA (465,329 cases), Spain (153,222), Italy (143,626), France (118,783) and Germany (118,235), China (82,885), Iran (66,220) and the United Kingdom (65,872).

China is a bit of an exception here. While the country started the pandemic, more than 77,600 people have already recovered. Worldwide, around 354,000 people have been rescued.

In general, it is important to remember that all these statistics (compiled by Johns Hopkins University) are only confirmed cases and depend on the level of analysis. The actual number is believed to be higher.
