First COVID-19 vaccine given in New Brunswick

“We are really excited. People are well and we believe it is a historic day for Miramichi,” said Horizon Health Karen McGrath, CEO.

- Dieppe’s non-mural program nurse, Mandy Hollen
The caregiver and four health care workers were the first New Brunswickers to be vaccinated against the coronavirus on December 19.

Dr. Boucher said all healthcare professional nightmares have infected COVID-19 and brought the virus into the community. With the vaccine, he says these fears are now beginning to disappear for him.
“That’s one of the things you can be confident that if you get vaccinated, it will help,” Boucher said.

“We have a duty to show our way as healthcare professionals and to actually promote our belief in science. We believe in this vaccine and have nothing to fear.”
Miramichi was chosen “in the north and south center of New Brunswick,” McGrath said in a briefing on Saturday.
“If you are a healthcare provider and work in an ICU, ER, or COVID unit, you are from all hospitals in the state today.”
Another reason Miramichi was chosen was the location of the freezer. According to Pfizer, the Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine should be kept at -70 ° C.
New Brunswick has accepted an offer from a bluefin tuna exporter in eastern PEI to lend two freezers to store vaccines.

Dr. Jennifer Russell, Chief Health Officer, said vaccine providers recommend that vaccines not be moved elsewhere. However, this is subject to change within the next three months.
For Pfizer vaccines, common side effects are injection site pain, malaise, muscle aches, and pain. Some people may also have a fever, Russell said.
The federal government also announced on Tuesday that it had secured 168,000 doses of Moderna vaccine, which should arrive by the end of December.
However, it is subject to approval from Health Canada.
Russell said on Saturday that about 75 percent of the population were “eager to get vaccinated,” according to a survey in New Brunswick.
The state said half of the 3,900 vaccinations arriving next week, or 1,950, will be held until the weekend of January 9, 2021 and will be the second vaccination for those vaccinated this weekend.
The other half will be used to give two doses to an additional 975 people in New Brunswick.
“This is the very first step, a bucket drop, but the ball is starting to roll,” Russell said.
