Water Mission mobilizes disaster response in Indonesia after the earthquake

Charleston, South Carolina (WCBD) – Charleston-based nonprofit organization Water Mission on Friday mobilized disaster response teams in the aftermath of the devastating earthquake in Indonesia.

The magnitude 6.2 earthquake struck Sulawesi island, triggering a landslide that followed and leaving about 15,000 people homeless.

The water mission got its start in Indonesia in the aftermath of the infamous 2004 tsunami. An office was set up in Indonesia, and the team was working on “converting temporary water treatment systems into safe and sustainable water projects.”

Additional staff are being deployed in the Indonesia office to assist in the disaster response efforts.

“Safe access to water is critical in the first few days after a natural disaster to avoid the spread of disease,” said George Green, President and CEO of the Water Mission.

“Our global staff are well-versed in responding to disasters. The established presence of the Water Mission in Sulawesi will allow us to reach those in need as quickly as possible with clean water,” he continued.
