Washington, Oregon reports a new strain of coronavirus |
Seattle—Washington and Oregon are currently seeing additional cases of a more contagious variant of COVID-19 in the Pacific Northwest.
The B.1.1.7 mutant, which first appeared in the United Kingdom last September, was confirmed by two DNA sequencing in Snohomish County, the Washington State Department of Health announced on Saturday.
The Oregon Department of Health confirmed a second case in someone in Yamhill County on Saturday, a week after the first case in the state was detected in Multnomah County.
Authorities in Washington, Oregon, and Idaho assume that the B.1.1.7 variant has spread to the northwest.
Data collected by the Institute of Virology at the University of Washington School of Medicine show that so far the presence of mutants is low in Washington. The lab screened 1,035 samples taken between December 25th and January 20th. The two cases it found are the first in the state.
According to the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, there is no conclusive evidence that it is more severe than other virus strains. Also, according to public health authorities, the protocol for prevention and containment of this variant is the same as in other cases of COVID-19. Wear a mask, wash your hands, and avoid gathering with others, especially indoors or in poorly ventilated areas.

Shah, director of health at Washington, in a news release. “Now that this variant has been discovered, it emphasizes the absolute importance of doubling all precautions to protect Washington citizens from COVID-19.”
The B.1.1.7 variant is expected to become the most prevalent new coronavirus strain in the United States within a few months.
According to state data, more than 300,000 COVID-19 cases and more than 4,100 deaths have been reported in Washington. In Oregon, there are 137,600 cases and nearly 1,900 deaths.
