Michael R. Bloomberg and Dr. Tedros Adhan Ghebreyesus call for a global focus on noncommunicable diseases to save lives from COVID-19

In recognition of Bloomberg’s contribution to improving public health, the WHO reaffirms his third term as WHO Global Ambassador

Michael R. Bloomberg, founder, Bloomberg LP and Bloomberg Philanthropies, joined today Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, Director-General of the WHO, in calling for urgent action to combat noncommunicable diseases (NCDs) such as diabetes, hypertension, heart disease, cancer and respiratory diseases , which globally account for over 74% of deaths and worsen the outcomes of patients with COVID-19.

That comes when the WHO confirms that Bloomberg will continue his third term as WHO’s world ambassador for noncommunicable diseases and injuries.

His role as WHO ambassador accompanies decades of engaging in health policy, including his three terms as mayor of New York, and years of collaboration with the WHO in addressing some of the greatest global health challenges. In its role, Bloomberg will continue to raise awareness of the link between COVID-19 and noncommunicable diseases (NCDs), advocate for investment in measures to combat NCDs and injuries, mobilize cities for better health, and support the use of health data to drive programs and policy.

“The COVID-19 pandemic highlighted the full danger of non-communicable diseases – and hinted at the urgent need for stronger public health policies and investment to prevent them.” said Dr. Tedros. “We call on world leaders in the economy and government to take aggressive steps to prevent non-communicable diseases. Less NCDs would mean fewer deaths during a pandemic. “

“Most of those who died from COVID-19 had a basic non-communicable disease, such as cardiovascular disease, diabetes, chronic lung disease or cancer. NCDs account for nearly three-quarters of all deaths worldwide, and the scale and urgency of the problem has been abruptly alleviated by COVID-19. NCDs can be prevented, and we know what works, ” said Michael R. Bloomberg, WHO’s global ambassador for noncommunicable diseases and injuries. “Bloomberg Philanthropies is working with the WHO to reduce tobacco use, support a healthier diet, fight cardiovascular disease and strengthen the health data that guides our work. We look forward to expanding our efforts to help more cities and countries take action on NHS and save lives. “

NCDs currently kill over 40 million people each year. These chronic conditions have also increased the death toll from COVID-19, which has already claimed two million lives. People who are obese, use tobacco and have hypertension are at increased risk of being hospitalized and dying from COVID-19.

In addition to COVID-19, Bloomberg’s work with the WHO and wider public health investments have focused on large, life-saving initiatives to reduce tobacco and e-cigarette use for young people, support healthy food policies, reduce drowning and improve road safety and maternal health. , among others.

Bloomberg Philanthropies teamed up with WHO and Vital Strategies in 2017 to launch the Partnership for Healthy Cities, a network of 70 global cities, covering nearly 300 million people, dedicated to NZD and injury prevention since 2017. Over the past year, it has expanded its support urban leaders around the world to include and resources and tools overcome the challenges of a pandemic.

After more than 15 years of collaboration, WHO and Bloomberg Philanthropies have shared major achievements in public health:

  • 5 billion people are covered by at least one strong tobacco control measure
  • 3.3 billion people have benefited from stronger traffic safety laws
  • 70 cities cover almost 300 million people, dedicated to preventing undeveloped diseases and injuries
  • Countries around the world are supported in strengthening their health data systems through the Health Data Program. Newly released SCORE Report it is the first to assess countries’ progress in creating sustainable health data.

WHO and Bloomberg Philanthropies will continue to drive change in tobacco control, noncommunicable disease prevention, road safety, injury, and health data improvement. Later this year, in partnership with Bloomberg Philanthropies, the WHO will launch a new “case of investing in NCDs” that will highlight the value of investing in policies and interventions to prevent NCDs.
