Brexit: MPs block bid for early election – BBC News
The UK Prime Minister’s request for an initial General Election seems to be rejected by members of Parliament after opposition parties in mid-October held a European Union summit.
Labor, the Liberal Democrats, the Scottish National Party and the Plaid Cymru Wales party have said they will not back the government for the election. They said they would like an extension to the Brexit date of 31 October to ensure that the UK leaves the EU without agreement.
During his visit to Scotland, Mr Johnson was accused of making a “separate political mistake”. When the House of Lords approved the bill, there was no Brexit to prevent a deal. He will get a royal permit and become law on Monday.
Our deputy political editor, John Pienaar, introduces Reeta Chakrabarte.
