Japanese supermarket sells earthquake-damaged beer cans as ‘brave heroes’

On February 13, 2021, a 7.3-magnitude earthquake struck off the eastern coast of Japan, knocking out power to nearly 950,000 homes.

Eerily, this happened just weeks before the tenth anniversary of the 2011 Fukushima nuclear meltdown.

Fortunately, no tsunami warning was released due to the recent earthquake.

But like all strong earthquakes, there is bound to be damage. This was the case for Happy Food RE Fanz supermarket in Date, Fukushima.

According to reports from NHK, a portion of the supermarket’s roof collapsed, causing many store items to fall from their shelves during the earthquake in Miyagi and Fukushima prefectures in Tohoku district.

Unfortunately for the supermarket, some of the victims of this natural disaster included nearly 40 cans of beer, which were scratched and injured during the earthquake.

But of course, you are bound to come across damaged goods in the supermarket, even without Mother Nature’s fury playing a role. Happy Food RE Fanz has a section dedicated to this, which is sold at discount prices.

However, Yohei Sato, who runs the store’s alcohol division, felt the beer cans were worth more than just handling the reduced / spoiled merchandise.

So he came up with a special sign, describing the damaged beer cans as “brave heroes” who responded to the earthquake:

The sign reads: “These are the heroes who stood bravely in the face of the earthquake. I don’t want them to be treated like fallen and damaged products sold at a reduced price. They look different but they have delicious alcohol on the inside. Please take them with you and let them live their lives as delicious alcohol.”

And if that compelling description weren’t enough for you, Sato might have included a charming illustration of a disassembled beer can, kind of like a war hero, accompanied by a speech bubble saying, “We shall not be defeated by an earthquake !!”.

To truly honor their “service,” the store sold them at their regular prices, rather than offering discounts. I mean, when you think about it, the beer inside the cans is still the same. And you’ll throw away the cans once you’re done, however. So I don’t see a problem with this at all.

“Alcohol is more like my kids than it is products,” Sato told NHK.

“I’m glad to see people put the dent cans in their baskets, knowing they’d be out and having fun with it.”

By February 17, 2021, all damaged beer cans had been sold, according to SoraNews24.
