Wondolowski of Earthquakes, Salinas is among the tallest in Club 1 MLS

Neither Chris Wondolovsky nor Chia Salinas is technically one of the club’s men, but both players have been with the San Jose Earthquakes for a long time and are truly associated with earthquakes in the public imagination.

Turns out, they are in fact among the longest serving active players at an MLS club at the moment.

Sporting Kansas City had a story on their website that indicated that they currently have the longest running MLS coach (Peter Vermes) and tallest single-team player (Graham Zusi), both of whom started at the club in their current roles in 2009.

So Zusi beats Wondo in terms of being the tallest player, because he was drafted by the club and signed at the start of the 2009 season, while Wondolowski was traded to Earthquakes by Houston Dynamo in June 2009. Just a few months apart!

Meanwhile, Salinas joined Quakes Forever in 2012, which places him in fifth place in terms of active players with the longest spell in a club, behind Zusi, Wondo, Russell Teibert of Vancouver Whitecaps and Diego Chara of The Vancouver Whitecaps Portland. Timbers, the last two who joined their clubs in 2011.

So overall, it’s unusual for his teammates to play together for so long in MLS these days. While some players settle into one club for a while, movement is very common in this league, and this makes Wondo and Salinas the club’s bedrock even more prominently.
