Coronavirus: Major European tourism events canceled – BBC News

By the end of this week, Italy has announced a plan to phase out its blockade, Prime Minister Giuseppe Conte said.

In a Facebook post, Mr Conte said the country could not provide a policy of acting “with the utmost prudence” and said Italy would reopen it with a “serious scientific policy”.

“It is a reasonable hope that we will apply from May 4,” he said.

Italy has had 24,648 deaths, the highest toll recorded in Europe.

Data released on Tuesday shows the number of people infected for the second time in a row. But deaths rose 534 in the previous 24 hours, compared to the 454 rise announced on Monday.

The famous annual San Fermin running of the bulls festival in July has been canceled due to the coronavirus crisis.

“As expected, it still leaves us with great sadness,” Deputy Mayor Ana Elizalde said in a statement from Pamplona City Hall.

The festival, which attracts thousands of attendees and has become famous in Ernest Hemingway’s novel “The Sun Also Rises,” has rarely been canceled in its history.

It is the second European tourist event to be canceled as it was announced today that Oktoberfest, Germany’s famous annual beer drinking festival, will see six million people travel to Munich for the event.
