The United States says it has shot down several Iranian ballistic missiles and drones launched toward the Strait of Hormuz and the Gulf, testing a fragile truce between the United States and Iran as negotiations drag on.
According to the US Central Command (CENTCOM), seven ballistic missiles were fired towards Kuwait and Bahrain on Friday evening, hours after CENTCOM shot down four Iranian attack drones launched towards the Strait of Hormuz.

He added that six of the missiles were intercepted and the seventh failed to hit its target.
Kuwait and Bahrain have condemned the Iranian missile and drone strikes, calling them a violation of their sovereignty and a threat to regional security. Egypt, Jordan and Qatar also issued condemnations on Saturday.
Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) said it carried out attacks targeting US bases in the region in retaliation for earlier US strikes. The US military claimed to have hit Iranian coastal surveillance radar sites in Goruk and Qeshm Island.
Iran’s Foreign Ministry denounced the U.S. attacks as a “blatant” violation of the ceasefire in effect since April, saying they demonstrated that the United States “not only lacked the will to reduce tensions” but “seriously endangered the security of the region.”
Tehran also said the United States bears responsibility for “all effects and consequences of these illegal actions, as well as any possible escalation of tensions.”
The US military, for its part, said it attacked Iranian radar sites to “defend against further attacks” after Iranian drones fired towards the Strait of Hormuz. Iran’s IRGC claimed the clashes began when the U.S. military attempted to “illegally” escort tankers through the waterway, which Iran largely closed during the war.
“Fight back with force”
The United States and Iran participated in indirect talks to reach an interim agreement to end the war; However, the two sides remain at odds.
As part of this agreement, Iran wants sanctions lifted, access to frozen assets and the lifting of the American blockade on its ports.
At the same time, the United States called for the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz and concessions on Tehran’s nuclear program.
Reporting from Tehran, Al Jazeera’s Almigdad Alruhaid said the latest IRGC attacks were a “warning” for the United States.
“The IRGC has clearly stated that this latest incident began when several US-backed oil tankers attempted to transit through the state of Hormuz without coordination with the IRGC,” he said, adding that a series of back-and-forth attacks followed.
“They are explicitly warning that this type of aggression by the United States in the region will not go unanswered and that they will respond forcefully and immediately,” Alruhaid said.
Reporting from Doha, Qatar, Al Jazeera’s Zein Basravi explained that tit-for-tat attacks have become a “pillar” of the war in Iran.
“The longer this lasts, the more difficult it is for the parties to the negotiations, for the mediators, for the GCC. [Gulf Cooperation Council] not only to recover economically, but also to reach a point where the fighting will stop. Every time one of these attacks occurs, it hardens political and military positions, making the idea of a negotiated solution even more fragile,” he said.
“We have seen the international economy suffer greatly from the blockades due to Iran’s actions in the Strait of Hormuz and the US blockade against Iran, and we fear that this will continue.”
