Pakistan govt denies legal rights, healthcare to jailed former PM Imran Khan and his wife: PTI

The Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf party unit in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province has accused the Pakistani government of denying legal and constitutional rights to jailed former Prime Minister Imran Khan and his wife.

The party claims the couple is being denied adequate health care.

Imran Khan has been serving his prison sentence since 2023, in connection with several cases. Meanwhile, his wife, Bushra Bibi, was placed under house arrest and then sent to prison in May 2024.

Shafi Jan, PTI leader and also a minister of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province, also told a press conference here on Friday that Khan and his wife were also not allowed to contact any of their relatives or party members.

Jan said Khan had been suffering from an eye disease for four months and his eyesight had not yet fully recovered.

The couple were taken to hospital for medical treatment on Thursday evening in violation of prison regulations, he said at the press conference organized by Insaf Doctors Forum, the official representative body of medical professionals aligned with Khan’s party, PTI.

Claiming that the medical examination and treatment process lasted around three hours, Jan said, “However, no authenticated medical report or details regarding their condition were shared with the group or family members. »

The PTI leader demanded that the couple be given access to their personal doctors and requested their immediate transfer to Shifa International Hospital for comprehensive medical evaluation and treatment.

Referring to the court’s directives regarding meetings with the party’s founder, the minister said continuing restrictions led to violation of court orders and could amount to contempt of court.
