EBRD support to earthquake-hit Malatya to improve water systems

The European Bank for Reconstruction and Development provides a €95 million loan to improve water networks in Malatya, Türkiye

The European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) is providing a sovereign loan of up to €95 million to support the rehabilitation and construction of water supply, wastewater and stormwater networks in the city of Malatya in south-eastern Turkey.

The financing, provided to the Republic of Turkey and implemented by Iller Bankasi AS for the Malatya Water and Sanitation Administration (MASKI), will help restore basic municipal services following the devastating February 2023 earthquakes.

Malatya’s water and sanitation systems were severely damaged during the earthquakes, resulting in water loss, leakage of networks and disruption of processes in wastewater treatment, with adverse impacts on the environment and public health.

The project will finance the rehabilitation and construction of approximately 467 km of water supply networks, 118 km of sewerage networks, and 9 km of stormwater drainage systems, in addition to associated supervision services.

This investment in Malatya will help rebuild vital water and sanitation services while strengthening the city’s resilience to future shocks. By improving efficiency, reducing water losses and ensuring the reliability of vital services, the project will also contribute to sustainable urban development.”

Once completed, this investment will improve access to reliable water services, enhance wastewater collection, support effective wastewater treatment in line with global standards, and reduce urban flood risks.

It will also enhance the resilience of municipal services by enhancing disaster preparedness, risk management and operational capacity through a dedicated stakeholder capacity building programme.

The project represents the EBRD’s fifth investment through the Sovereign Earthquake Response Package, bringing its total support for water infrastructure in earthquake-affected areas to more than €440 million.

The European Bank for Reconstruction and Development is one of Turkey’s major institutional investors, having pledged €24.4 billion across the country since 2009, most of it in the private sector.
