Kenya's rare white giraffe "killed by poachers" | News from the world

In Kenya, only white giraffes and their calves have been killed by poachers, environmentalists have said, which is a major blow to the conservation of rare animals not found anywhere else in the world.

The bodies of the two giraffes were found in a skeletal condition after being killed by armed poachers in Garissa in eastern Kenya, the Ishaqbini Hirola Community Conservancy said in a statement.

Their death leaves a surviving white giraffe, a lone man carried by the same slaughtered female, the cannery said.

We are the only community in the world to be the guardian of the white giraffe, said conservation director Mohammed Ahmednoor.

Its culling is a blow to the immense measures taken by the community to conserve rare and unique species, and a wake-up call for continued support for conservation efforts.

The white giraffe aroused huge interest in 2017 when it was first spotted on the reserve and again when it gave birth to two calves, the last in August of the year last.

Their alabaster color is not caused by albinism but a condition known as leukism, which means that they continue to produce dark pigments in their soft tissues, which gives them dark eyes.
