In the early 1900s, hundreds of East Asian artisans came to West Hollywood to build a replica of a palace found in the mountains outside Kyoto, Japan, for Eugene and Adolph Bernheimer. , byClio. The hilltop mansion, named Yamashiro or “Mountain Palace”, was built to house the huge collection of art and artifacts they collected during their travels through China, Korea and Japan.
Completed in 1914, the landscaping of the mansions alone cost $2 million and encompassed eight acres of gardens and ponds, through which visitors could paddle Japanese boats or ride Taiwanese pedicabs. One New Year’s Eve, when Glover’s son, also named Thomas Glover, served appetizers and Yamashiro Restaurant was born. Glover’s son still owns and operates the restaurant, and upholds his father’s commitment to preserving the palace’s history. Today, the 600-year-old Yamashiro Pagoda is the oldest structure in the state of California (via Yamashiro Hollywood).
