Original ‘Pingu’ voice actor Carlo Bonomi dies at 85

Carlo Bonomi lent his voice to all the characters of “Pingu” from 1990 to 2000.

Carlo Bonomi, the voice actor who brought Pingu to life on television, has died aged 85. Mr. Bonomi was originally from Milan. He lent his voice to the clay penguin and all the characters on the TV show from 1990 to 2000.

The cause of his death has yet to be revealed, but Pingu’s fans have flooded social media with tributes recalling his iconic “noot noot” catchphrase. American cartoonist Travis Bickerstaff said that Bonomi’s “noot noot” would live.

“If you’re wondering if this will be the end of Pingu, it isn’t,” Bickerstaff said, adding, “Other voice actors in the Pingu franchise have carried on Bonomi’s legacy, since he was established the “Penguinese” language for the series.”

Another said: “This man (Mr. Bonomi) not only gave birth to millions of people by giving us Pingu’s voice, but he also shouted several Noots at our leisure. Farewell Carlo, Noot Noot.” A third added: “Keep calm, Carlo Bonomi. No one can do literally all of Pingu’s vocals like you did.”

According evening standard, Mr. Bonomi created the Penguinease language for children’s clay show based on the Milanese dialect. He was inspired by his work on the Italian animated series La Linea.

Pingu was co-created by Otmar Gutmann and Erika Brueggeman. The children’s show followed the life of a cheeky penguin. The voice for the show has earned Mr. Bonomi a worldwide following.

The actor also voiced Italian versions of popular cartoon characters such as Mickey Mouse and Fred Flinstone. Additionally, Mr. Bonomi made announcements at Milan Central Station and Santa Maria Central Station in Florence.
