Legendary French actress and singer Jane Birkin has died aged 76.
THE confirmed that Jane died on Sunday after reports that she was found dead at her home in Paris.
French President Emmanuel Macron also confirmed the news on . “Because she embodied freedom, because she sang the most beautiful words of our language, Jane Birkin was a French icon,” he wrote. “A complete artist, her voice was as sweet as her commitments were fiery. She bequeaths us tunes and images that will never leave us.”
Jane was a prolific actress who worked with acclaimed directors like Michelangelo Antonioni, Jacques Rivette and Agns Varda.
She also had a ten-year relationship with her musical collaborator and late songwriter Serge Gainsbourg. The couple had one child together, musician and actress Charlotte Gainsbourg, in 1971.
Jane too earlier this year. “It was a joy to sing what he wrote and see his face when he was happy with me, but he was also a real stinker if I didn’t understand,” she said. “He hit me with a ruler. If you’re with your lover in the recording studio, it can be as hard as it is enjoyable. God, it was painful.”

Jane also inspired Herms’ “Birkin bag”, created in 1984 after she met former Herms chief executive Jean-Louis Dumas during a robbery.
