Malik Yoba visits students at Lower Richland High School
25 students will be part of the cast of a film produced by Yoba's production company.
HOPKINS, SC You may have seen him on the big screen in “Cool Runnings” or “Why Did I Get Married.” On Monday, actor Malik Yoba visited Lower Richland High School to help inspire students.
A round of applause filled the room for Yoba, who played the role of encouragement to the students.
He gave me so much confidence. Just watching it on TV and seeing it in person really made me feel like you got it,” Lower Richland High School student Jonathan Gilmore said.
Yoba helps students prepare to perform in South Carolina native Stephanie Perry Moore's production of Swoop.
“It's about five young women who find themselves on a list, a little form of bullying, so they go to a guidance counselor and they sing and they turn what was supposed to be a sad thing into a good thing , Stephanie Perry Moore said.
Swoop, a musical film, will be produced by the production company Yobas and will be shot in Colombia.
We're not spending enough time putting energy and resources into what's going to help these kids have the best lives possible, Yoba said.
25 students auditioned and will make up the cast of the film.
All my dreams came true because I saw people doing the things I aspired to do. The message that we don't get enough of, especially from our young people, is that their birthright is abundance, their birthright is infinite possibility, their birthright is the ability to achieve the things that they really dream,” Yoba said.
Lower Richland students are now excited to have the chance to see their lives played out on the big screen.
“If he can teach me his way of doing things, then I can learn his way of acting and everything, then I can be up there just like him,” Gilmore said.
