Dave Bautista on How to Dune: Part 2 Validates Him as an Actor | IGN Fan Festival 2024

 

Former wrestler turned actor Dave Bautista has made it clear in the past that he wants to become a serious, dramatic actor, and has now said that his role as Glossu Rabban in Dune: Part II helped validate him as a such.

In an interview for IGN Fan Fest, Bautista said that a certain scene from Dune: Part II was a “dream” for him to perform, which he said required complete trust from director Denis Villeneuve. We won't say what that scene is that won't air until March 1, but we will share Bautista's thoughts without spoilers.

“I think this is the only moment where you can see the true essence of Rabban,” Bautista said. “Most actors might look at that scene and say, 'I don't want to do that.' And I read that scene and I was like, 'Man, that's great.' Because that's when you can see the different layers of the character and that's when you see who Rabban really is.

“Any big, tough guy could play this big, menacing bully. But when you add layers to it, especially at that moment, it's an artist's dream. It's my dream.

“And that's what I like: that I have this confidence from Denis who knows that I could succeed in this moment, because it validates me. I always said that I wanted to be an actor, I want to be a film . star. And it's times like this that I can say, I told you so, you know? I can prove my point.

Bautista's most famous role is that of Drax in the Guardians of the Galaxy trilogy. Although he turns serious within moments, Drax plays a comedic role in most of the films, leading Bautista to feel relieved when his tenure ended in 2023.

“I'm so grateful to Drax. I love him,” Bautista said at the time. “But there is relief [that it’s over]. Not everything was pleasant. It was hard to play this role. The makeup process was getting me down. And I just don't know if I want Drax to be my legacy. It's a silly performance, and I want to do more dramatic things.”
