The Oahu resort has become one of Hollywood's favorite filming locations

For over a century, Hawaii has been the filming location for countless Hollywood films and television shows. It's where dinosaurs roamed in “Jurassic Park,” rich guests checked in in “The White Lotus” and Indiana Jones ran through the jungle in “Raiders of the Lost Ark.”

Although filming takes place across the islands, there is one resort that racks up a considerable number of productions on IMDb.

On Oahu's North Shore, Turtle Bay Resort has appeared in more than 150 movies and TV shows, sometimes in a mutated way that only Hollywood can do. The hotel, which opened in 1972, was first featured in 1981 in the second season of the original series “Magnum PI.” The episode was called “From Moscow to Maui” and was filmed at the pool bar at sunset.

Since then, he has appeared in many successful films and television series, including “The Hunger Games: Catching Fire”, “Lost”, “Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides” and “Forgetting Sarah Marshall”.

“It's crazy how many people come here just to 'forget Sarah Marshall,'” Joey Woofter, general manager of the Turtle Bay Resort, told SFGATE.

While some films take place inside the hotel, others take advantage of the resort's 1,300 acres and 5 miles of untouched coastline, where some of its beaches are often empty all day.

“Kawela Bay is by far the most popular location where we have probably filmed the most films and shows,” Woofter said.

Woofter said they weren't actively looking for movies and TV shows to film on their property, but word of mouth (and a close-knit film community in Hawaii) made the resort a hot spot.

In fact, last week, researchers for two different Disney films stopped by the resort, he said.
