Another entertainment district could be coming to downtown Orlando — and would have space for retail, entertainment, hotels and apartments.

ORLANDO, Florida. – The City Beautiful could see the Magic Entertainment District built in downtown Orlando as the City Council meets to discuss and vote on the project Monday.

The Magic Entertainment District would feature a mix of retail, entertainment, apartments and hotels. It would be located directly across from and around the KIA Center in downtown Orlando.

The $500 million project would include a live event venue, plaza, retail, restaurants, a 260-room hotel and a 270-unit residential skyscraper. There would also be offices and parking.

“I would definitely show up to games early if there were things going on outside the stadium,” one Orlando Magic fan said.

“I definitely think it would be a good addition to Orlando itself. Bring a lot of money to Orlando and bring good energy before games and everything,” added Orlando resident Chidoziri Maghiro.

The developer believes the Magic Entertainment District would enhance and provide an economic benefit to downtown Orlando.

“This entertainment system would bring a lot of traffic and money to Orlando, and I think it's necessary for people who come to the KIA Center and attend NBA games,” said C'ashia McCrary, a resident. “These apartments would also be perfect for more people to stay downtown.”

On Monday, the city council will meet to vote on an incentive for the entertainment complex. Under the Orlando City Council plan, the city would reimburse between $35 million and $40 million in property taxes to the developer. This is something not all residents agree with.

“Some people don’t want their taxes going toward this,” McCrary said. “They feel like they shouldn’t have to pay for new development of things around town.”

City council members will meet to vote Monday at 2 p.m.
