Explaining how he portrayed the domestic turmoil these courtesans faced, the filmmaker added: “They had internal politics. They had to fight as hard as any middle-class woman to survive. I didn't just show the glamor part; there is a lot of inner pain in every close-up. We created trouble from rumors, some from real people.

Sanjay Leela Bhansali also defended Heeramandi by pointing out that it is a work of fiction and part of his imagination. “My work should not be seen as grounded in reality like a documentary on Lahore and Heeramandi. It is an impression of Lahore, Heeramandi, courtesans and their lives. It can't be realistic because I didn't live in that time to create it as clearly as I did in that time. When you work on fiction, it’s to create a world for you,” he explained.

The director's next project, Love And War, will feature Alia Bhatt, Ranbir Kapoor and Vicky Kaushal in lead roles.
