Josh Brolin doesn't buy difficult actors
Some directors prefer a soft touch when working with their talent, but as an actor himself, Josh Brolin's demeanor behind the camera is more of a no-bullshit approach. Discussing his first time in the director's chair on his TV show “Outer Range” with SquireBrolin explained how the directing was forced upon him rather than asked, but that it came from other people seeing that he had the skills and sensitivity to take on the role.
“I've had a lot of interests over the decades that I never really understood,” Brolin said. “When I realized, I was able to put everything in one place without trying to force it. My whole life had meaning… I'm not going to stop acting and just become a director. But it uses more of my sensitivity as a person. I am naturally a community person. I'm excited about experimentation. To imprison this with just Me This seems really limiting. But maybe I'm just a mediocre actor.
Although misplaced, this feeling of mediocrity may stem from a general lack of vanity that Brolin exudes. After growing up and coming of age in the business, he has no one to impress other than his audience and realizes that being reliable on set is more important than proving his artistry. Discussing this with Esquire, he said, “I said that as a joke in 'Kimmel' — I was like, 'I don't particularly like the actors.' Especially people who don't come on set and that kind of shit. If there's a good reason, I understand, but if you're just an irritated actor because you're so creative or sensitive, I just don't believe it.
Without specifying any negative experiences, Brolin went on to talk about his preference for just doing the work and trying to create something that alienates people without force-feeding a message.
“I miss that feeling,” Brolin said of being moved by a work of cinema, art or literature. “I don't know if it's because I'm jaded, or if Fonzie has tried to jump the shark too many times, but I miss just being transported.”
Hopefully Brolin can help change that by expanding his repertoire and exploring middle age. He told Esquire: “I’m happy with this time. It's my version of a midlife crisis, and I really love it. I don't buy Porsches. We are leaving Los Angeles. We direct and write a play; we have a book coming out in November. We do not care. I'm tired. It does not matter. What matters is manifesting what I feel, and that has been a great liberation.
