Brooke Shields elected president of stage actors union
Brooke Shields, a model-turned-actress who has appeared in film, television and on stage, has been elected the next president of Association for Actors' Equitythe union representing actors and stage managers.
Shields, 58, will take office immediately. She succeeds Kate Shindle, who has served as union president since 2015, and announced last month that she would not seek reelection.
The position of Equity president is a voluntary job and Shields was elected to a four-year term. A number of other well-known artists have previously held this position, including Burgess Meredith, Ellen Burstyn, Colleen Dewhurst and Ron Silver.
Shields won the election with about half the vote; the balance was split between two vice presidents of equities, Erin Maureen Koster and Wydetta Carter. His victory was reported by the news bulletin Broadway Journal and announced by the union on Friday; a union spokesperson said she was not available for an interview.
In a campaign video posted on YouTube, Shields said one of his priorities would be to push for more government funding for the arts. I understand the real need to support live theater, and I'm used to being able to open doors and help, she said.
Equity has approximately 51,000 members and represents them in contract negotiations across the country. Just last week, the union won the right to represent various artists at Disneyland. The union will now have to try to negotiate a contract for these workers.
The union is negotiating a new contract for Off Broadway workers and is at odds with the Broadway League over a new contract governing development work and how performers are paid when they workshop shows in development. Equity has threatened that its members will stop working on these development projects if an agreement is not reached by mid-June.
Shields rose to fame through films like Pretty Baby and The Blue Lagoon and through modeling, including for Calvin Klein. She appeared in five Broadway musicals, always as a replacement: Grease, Chicago, Cabaret, Wonderful Town and The Addams Family, as well as in a handful of Off Broadway shows.
Her early career and the problematic ways in which she was sexualized as a child and teenager were the subject of a documentary last year.
