After the ties were severed, both Bharatiya Janata Festival (BJP) and the Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) compete independently on the Gurdaspur Lok Sabha parliamentary seat.
The BJP has nominated three-time MP and former Punjab Vidhan Sabha deputy chairman Dinesh Singh Babbu, while the SAD has nominated the party's senior vice-president Daljeet Singh Cheema.

THE Congress fielded its heavyweight, Sukhjinder Singh Randhawa, former deputy chief minister, while the PAA bet on Amansher Singh Sherry Kalsi, sitting MLA from Batala.
Interestingly, the BJP has decided this time not to award ticket to any celebrity or film star, which is seen as a break from its past practice when it was contested in alliance with the SAD.

Due to its geographical features, Gurdaspur Lok Sabha constituency shares an international border with Pakistan, as well as Kathua and Chamba districts of Jammu and Kashmir and Himachal Pradesh.
Two militant attacks, one on the Pathankot IAF base on January 2, 2016 and the other on the Dinanagar police station on July 27, 2015, highlight the sensitivity of the constituency.
