Jelly Roll says legal conundrums, including misdemeanors, prevent it from participating in international shows

Jelly Roll will keep its concerts in the United States for the time being, at least until a few legal hurdles are overcome.

The country singer, real name Jason DeFord, told Jon Bon Jovi for Interview magazine that while he was very excited about traveling abroad, his team had to put together the final pieces of some legal puzzles to so that I can go abroad.

DeFord has been open about his felony convictions, including one for aggravated robbery after using a gun to steal weed when he was 16.

The 39-year-old was hopeful that he would one day bring his live performances to an international audience, although the timeline for that is still unclear.

America finally agreed to let me go and give me a passport, but some countries won't let me come because of my crimes, he continued. We are working on this. I think this will work in my favor.

Bon Jovi later spoke out on the subject, criticizing the archaic rules that prevented DeFord from traveling. But the musician seemed grateful that the opportunity might one day exist.

For the record, I'm a kid from Antioch, Tennessee, whose father never left the Southeast region until he was 50, DeFord said.

In an interview with The Times last year,DeFord detailed his teenage and young adult yearsin Antioch, a suburb of Nashville, Tennessee. He said he spent a lot of time behind bars on theft and drug charges.

Although he is not a politician, in part because he cannot vote because of his crimes, DeFord said he has a personal relationship with government.

I don't like the way they treat guys like me, he said, especially after it was proven that we were rehabilitated and became taxpaying citizens. I have reinvested millions of dollars into the Nashville community.

In January,DeFord advocated for anti-fentanyl billbefore Congress, telling lawmakers the government needed to take more action to help people struggling with addiction, as well as prevent fatal overdoses.
