Tony Mordente died on June 11 at the age of 88. Mordente's artistic journey began at the High School of Performing Arts and the American Ballet Theater School, where he developed his dancing skills. According to several sources, his death occurred following a brief illness.
He gained significant recognition with his portrayal of A-Rab in the 1957 Broadway and 1958 West End productions of West Side Story.
“I was a real ballet fan,” he told PBS in 2007.
“I was just a ballet fan and I didn't know anything but ballet, and that's all I ever wanted to know. And I went to the Met one night when the Ballet Theater came back in city I was on scholarship at a ballet theater at the time.
“And I went to see, I think it was part of the Black Swan, and they also had some free fantasies on the schedule. It was during this Broadway production that he met his future wife, Chita Rivera, died in January. They had a daughter, Lisa, in 1958 and divorced in 1966.
Mordente also starred as Action in the 1961 film version of West Side Story and later choreographed for Broadway and television, including The Ed Sullivan Show and The Sonny & Cher Comedy Hour in the 1960s.
In the 1970s, Mordente moved into directing, working on popular television shows such as MAS*H, Family Ties, The A-Team and 7th Heaven. In 1978, he married Jean Fraser, with whom he had a second daughter, Adriana Mordente.
